The Evolution of a ghSMART Partnership

How Client Relationships Deepen Over Time

The work ghSMART does with clients often falls into two broad categories: leadership assessment, which helps boards and CEOs hire the right talent to meet the unique needs of the role and company, and leadership development, which helps executives maximize their success in current and future roles.

One of the defining characteristics of ghSMART's client relationships is how rarely they stay neatly within one category.

Over time, an initial engagement often opens the door to a much broader partnership as trust builds, understanding of the business and leadership team deepens, and new opportunities emerge to help clients succeed. This more integrated way of working allows ghSMART to support clients not just at a single moment in time, but as they shape their teams and businesses over the long term.

Starting with Leadership and Organizational Assessment

A good example comes from a long-standing private equity client that has engaged ghSMART across a range of portfolio companies for more than a decade. One such engagement began with a four-person ghSMART team supporting a newly acquired business. The starting point was to help the CEO and sponsor understand whether the company had the right leadership team, organizational capabilities, and talent plan to deliver on its next phase of growth.

The team spent time with each member of the leadership team through in-depth conversations and 360 feedback, developing a clear view of their strengths, growth opportunities, and fit for what the business needed moving forward. At the same time, the broader organization was assessed to understand whether its structure, priorities, and ways of working were aligned to support future growth.

As the work unfolded, the engagement spanned conversations with individual leaders, observations about team dynamics, and questions about the broader organization. Throughout the process, it became clear that each layer informed the others. Understanding a leader's strengths often provided insight into organizational strengths, while organizational priorities helped clarify what leaders needed to do differently to succeed.

Bringing It All Together

In a single engagement, ghSMART combined leadership assessment, coaching, team-level synthesis, organizational diagnosis, and practical recommendations for the CEO and sponsor. Together, these insights helped shape action plans for individual leaders while also identifying broader organizational changes needed to support growth.

The work also included recommendations to improve organizational alignment, strengthen leadership capabilities, and prioritize the talent investments needed to support the company's growth ambitions. Throughout the engagement, the team worked closely with the CEO to think through how change could be sequenced over time and how to build support across the organization.

A key element of the work was helping the CEO connect those insights into a coherent path forward. Rather than addressing isolated issues, the engagement helped the organization align its leadership team, talent strategy, and operating approach around a common set of goals.

Just as importantly, the work laid the foundation for future conversations. As the team's understanding of the business deepened, opportunities emerged to support the client on new leadership, talent, and organizational challenges that extended well beyond the original engagement.

How the Work Evolves Over Time

First, when the company was ready to act on several of the recommended talent changes, they turned to ghSMART again for support. Because the team had already developed a deep understanding of the business, leadership team, and organizational dynamics, it was able to move quickly and bring far more context to those decisions than would have been possible in a standalone assessment. ghSMART helped evaluate executives for new and evolving roles, considering not only their individual fit but also how they would complement the broader leadership team. As new leaders joined, coaching support expanded to those leaders as well, and the organization is now considering expanding coaching to additional members of the team.

Second, the success of the initial work led to a similar engagement at another portfolio company. There, the engagement included an organizational diagnostic, leadership assessments for newly created roles, and ongoing advisory support to the CEO.

Some of the most meaningful work often begins after an initial engagement ends. As trust develops, clients often invite ghSMART into increasingly important talent and leadership decisions. With each engagement, the team's understanding of the business, leadership team, and organizational context deepens, allowing it to bring more insight and perspective to future decisions while seeing the impact of that work unfold over years rather than months.

Why Long-Term Partnerships Matter

This example is not unique. One of the distinguishing aspects of ghSMART's approach is the opportunity to build a deep understanding of a client's business, leaders, and goals over time. The more context the team brings to each successive decision, the more effectively clients can be supported through the challenges ahead.

This is often one of the most rewarding aspects of the work. The goal is not simply to deliver recommendations and move on. Instead, long-term partnerships often create opportunities to help leaders implement change, navigate new challenges, and make critical talent decisions with the benefit of years of accumulated context.

What makes this especially rewarding is that no two relationships follow exactly the same path. Each client brings different challenges, priorities, and leadership dynamics, which means the work continues to evolve as understanding deepens. The result is the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution at critical moments while also seeing how those decisions shape the organization over time.

If you're energized by the idea of building lasting relationships with leaders, helping organizations navigate critical talent decisions, and seeing the impact of your work unfold over time, you may find a rewarding career at ghSMART. Learn more about opportunities to join our team here.
